I'm definitely no expert on bass playing and haven't been playing for very long. But I think that taking a known song and playing it in a different way can give you a sense of doing something new. Two very simple examples is Beatle's Come Together played as shuffle, and Britney Spears Baby one more time in a punk/funk version in which you play the same notes as in the original, but increase speed. This might sound kind of silly and in no way revolutionary, original or new - but it's great fun.
