: Hey! I am very interested in learning to play the bass and I was wondering how long it would take me to begin learning? my friend plays and is going to help teach me. :)

It's good that you have someone to teach you, that's pretty important. When I started I had myself and a video telling me the basics. I watched the video and within a week of picking up the bass I could do everything on the video, so I struck out on my own. I've never really looked back and i'm sure that I must have gained something from exploring into the world of bass and learning on my own, but it would have been a lot easier with someone to teach me. I sometimes think that I should have found a teacher because I don't really know enough about the bass (music theory and all that).

It will take you no time to learn how to play the bass. I found that it was getting a feel for the bass that was hardest, after that it was a case of playing and playing and playing. Next thing I knew, i'd been playing bass for about a year and I was getting good.
Just don't give in straight away if it seems hard, persist and practice for at least 3 or 4 hours a week. Bass is a fairly easy instrument to play (depending on your style).

But the most important thing to remember is to have fun. Playing the bass is great and you'll love it.

Good Luck
