Totally agree with Spurious. Practice, practice and when you're tired, rest and do it again... I was lucky. My mom taught me to read music when I was about 5. But that was treble clef. When I picked up bass in high school, I got a beginners book by Mel Bay and learned to read bass clef the same time I learned bass so it was pretty convenient to learn both at the same time. I can read TAB if that's all available, but I prefer manuscript. Once you learn to read 'notes' you can handle more music than you thought possible. Whatever the work involved, it will be well worth it. You won't be disappointed.
