: from ashdown (apm600), stewart (1.2), and qsc (rmx900), any suggestions?

: the sound i am ultimately after is that warm, dry, earthy (almost woody) bass

Greg, if you're looking for the type of sound you've described above, I strongly recommend that you check out an Epiphone Jack Casady signature bass. I have one, and they are amazing. As you probably know they're a semi hollow body (they look like a Gibson 335) and they have a single pickup roughly midway between the neck and the bridge, but what a pickup! It also has a Gibson type 3 position varitone switch which starts the bass' sound at delicate, and finishes up at nasty. In a word, it will easily produce that "Dead" type sound, and much more. One site that has them is They have them for $719.00, but, you can find them at other sites, and at e-bay. I think if you play one you'll be smitten like I was. BTW, I bought mine last December without ever having heard or played one before. It's a great bass.
