It depends on how you're playing. If you're doing just normal fingerstyle (with your index and middle fingers), try lightly pressing the string rather that plucking it. After a while, your finger will naturally slide up and mute the string above it so it won't sound. I also sometimes use my ring finger to mute the strings above it, especially when using fast fingers.

For slapping, a lot of the muting technique involves the left hand on the fingerboard. Use the fingers (except for the ones your playing notes with) to mute all the strings below all the notes you're playing.

There are many different approaches to it, but I hope this helps.
