I grew up with Motown too, although for me, it was "the golden oldies" that my father "inflicted" upon me. I really love Motown and since reading about and relistening to the Funk Brothers, it's added a whole new dimension for me. Most of those old basslines STILL have me scratching my head going, "whut?" Something to strive for, I guess.

If you haven't checked out this music, seriously, you do yourself a great disservice. Allen Slutsky's book is a great place to start as is the old tracks direct from Motown. Unfortunately, due to mixing practices of the day, the Bass is more felt then heard although I'm sure with careful listening you'll agree, Jamerson was a genius.
