: I am totally new to electric instruments. I just bought a bass, and now I need to get an amp. This may sound like a dumb question, but what is a difference between a regular amp and a bass amp? I have heard that using a regular amp with a bass will eventually blow it up. Is that true? All the bass amps that I've seen are like $200. I live in russia, so stuff is a little bit more expensive.
There's more to a bass amp than the speakers. The amplifier is designed to bring out and amplify the frequency range the bass has. A guitar amp is designed for the higher frequencies. You can play through a guitar amp but won't get the bottom. The volume will be limited because at the levels a bass needs, the amp will overdrive and cause all sorts of things to happen, mostly bad! Even though a lot of newer bass amps use 10" speakers as do guitar amps, they are made to handle the load. Even at the higher cost, you're always better off sticking with a bass amp.
