: I just picked up a Mesa/Boogie 400+ last week and a matching 4x10 cab. This is my first tube amp so I may just not know what I'm doing but I just am not getting the tone I've heard Mesa is known for. I'm afraid something may be wrong with mine. I've adjusted the tone knobs in just about every way imaginalbe and I just can't get a clean tone. It's either distorted or too boomy. I know it's not my bass cause I have a nice Warwick. When I go past 5 on the Master Volume the distortion is almost unbarable to hear. It just sounds horrible. I turned it up around 7 and got a real bad hissing sound then it started crackling. I looked at the tubes and they were glowing blue. I heard that's a sign they are old. Like I said before, this is my first tube amp so I really don't know what to do. And after all the good things I've heard about Mesa I'd hate to have to return it and settle for a different amp. Anyone have any suggestions to what may be wrong or what I may be doing wrong in my set up. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, and God Bless
