: : I just picked up a Mesa/Boogie 400+ last week and a matching 4x10 cab. This is my first tube amp so I may just not know what I'm doing but I just am not getting the tone I've heard Mesa is known for. I'm afraid something may be wrong with mine. I've adjusted the tone knobs in just about every way imaginalbe and I just can't get a clean tone. It's either distorted or too boomy. I know it's not my bass cause I have a nice Warwick. When I go past 5 on the Master Volume the distortion is almost unbarable to hear. It just sounds horrible. I turned it up around 7 and got a real bad hissing sound then it started crackling. I looked at the tubes and they were glowing blue. I heard that's a sign they are old. Like I said before, this is my first tube amp so I really don't know what to do. And after all the good things I've heard about Mesa I'd hate to have to return it and settle for a different amp. Anyone have any suggestions to what may be wrong or what I may be doing wrong in my set up. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, and God Bless

: hi there rick,
: sounds like you need new tubes ..another thing to watch out for with the 400+ is the bottom end it runs away with its self at times so when dialing in little is alot with the boogie .i also use a warwick (thumb) with my boogie and to be honest could be causing some of the problem with the boomy sound i have a music man and dont have that problem that much...so with some new tubes and careful dialing in (set the eq flat) and take it from there ..you should be sorted ..just be gentle and use small ammounts of eq till you get what your after..trust me you will love the 400+ once your used to its quirkey ways ..i think tou can get tube kits that work out a little cheaper but maybe some of the lads can confirm this ...best of luck with the 400+ dont give up on it ..hope this helps

ps ..be careful turning it on and off as this can cause damage to the tubes make sure all the volume controls are down ...and let it warm up for a few mins before use..i wait 5 or 10 mins..
