: Very good points by both guys. When you are first looking at picking an instrument, you have to go with your instincts. Whatever you need to be happy is what you go with. If it's price, buy one you can afford. if it's looks, buy one you like the look of. Then, as you learn the instrument, and talk around, you learn what's better, etc. My first bass was bought because it was green and $400. it was a great bass to learn on--Ibanez SR400. I liked the style so much, I've got a fretless 400 and a new SR800. However, 10 years later I'm still learning about the instrument. Because I'm not making a living playing music, I couldn't justify spending $2000 on a bass, so I stuck with price and the sound, playability and looks that I like, not what everyone else likes. You gotta do what you want on this one, and that starts with playing a lot of different basses and finding one you like.

I agree mostly on this one. I just kind of cringe when I think back to my music store teaching days, where you might get a totally terrible thing for like 250, a (then japanese, now mexican) fender for like 400, or something really great used in the middle of that range. Of course some of those prices are higher than 7 years ago. I just hope that anyone new to the bass buys a brand name instrument, and Ibanez is a brand as well as fender. I think we all know about these high markup pieces of junk, and some of those pieces of junk are brands too(I like Ibanez basses). Perhaps a helpful friend can steer you away from the "junk" in your local area. I would definitly read reviews at http://www.bassplayer.com good luck. A.
