This is important based on the type of music, the volume of other band memebers (Guitar, Drums, ect...). Very good points all of you. However, I will point out that my amp does not have an XLR, and using a mic on it always works fine. As for the amp, it really depends on if there is a PA or not. If there isn't you need to see how large the venue is. I play with a 200w combo, and i'm sure it would have enough power to play without a PA in a club setting. However, if you've got a PA, 100w ought to be enough.
