it depends on how much you have to spend.
the mexican Fender Basses can be good, I would stay away from the squire, hey tend to be very "clattery"
You could also find a nice bass at a local pawn shop. Is there a way you can take a more experienced Bass player with you to help you find one?
There are many P and J bass copies out there and many of them are quite good. If you find one you are interested in, do research on Harmony central to see what other people's impressions are of that bass.
