Poor left hand technique

I'm worried about my left hand technique.

If I play a note and then alternate between that note and the same note an octave higher, for instance G (3rd fret E-string) then G (5th fret D-string) then after a short while my hand really aches. It's when I have to stretch my hand to play these notes that my hand (mainly my palm) starts to hurt. If I play tenth fret on the E and twelth on the D then it's not so bad. But below the fifth fret it's gets worse.

I think that the problem must be that I don't have enough strength in my left hand, and so I need to build up stamina, or that I just have poor technique. Plus, I don't use my little finger (it's a weak little under-developed thing) so I use my first and third fingers.

Do I need to learn to use my little finger?
Do I have a poor technique maybe?
Do I need to build up stamina in my left hand?

Thanks
Adam
