Eddie, these strings give you the best of both worlds. I've used them on my 97 J fretless and they haven't "chewed" the board at all. I first triend some Dr Low Riders, but the really scuffed the neck, so off they came.
I went to the LINEA rotosounds SM55's for their reasonably smooth feel and great growl. and I haven't seen or experienced any extra damage since.
Steve Barr of Vintage Bass sells them on the internet for about $23.00 a set.

I've used these on fret and fretless, they're a great all around string.
