: Ok, I'm on a 5-string ESP (LTD-B305), and I love the deep, rich tone I get when I play over headphones or over some amps I tried when I bought the bass. The amp I currently own is a Crate 25x (25watt-1x10spkr-combo) and it doesn't fully exploit the tone of the ESP or give me the sound I want. I was considering going to a seperate head and cabinet amp, but I'm on a somewhat limited budget, and I don't currently need a huge cabinet. I'd like to get a good, or at least decent head, though, that has some versitilty on effects and tones and preferably, still give me the option of using it on a bigger cabinet in the future if I need to. I just don't know much about particular brands for amps. Should I go with ampeg or hartke? Any other suggestions? Have I put you to sleep yet with this insanely long query? Any help would be great.
Fearless, I don't own a rig (separate head and cab) but in October I bought an Ampeg B100R bass amp. It's a combo, 100watts into 1x15" speaker. It goes pretty loud for a small size amp. It has a headphone jack, but no effects loop and you CAN NOT add another cabinet to it, but, this doesn't bother me. Ampegs have a sort of vintage tone to them; alot of people like that, others do not. It's a great amp for getting 60s and 70s sounds. Hartkes are also good, but, they get more of a modern sound. The only way to know is to try them yourself. There are other very good brands, Eden, SWR, Ashton and Fender. Go to www.musiciansfriend.com to get an idea of prices and www.ampeg.com to get an idea of what Ampeg has to offer. I really like my Ampeg.
