: Well my nephew's (13yrs old) about to start playing the bass. He's about to buy a Hammer Chaparral for $220. Sound like a good deal? He's going to skip on buying an amp at first. Is there an inexpensive way to run the bass through a home stereo or through a computer? Any help would be appreciated.

Steve,
It can be done, but at some loss to fidelity. You won't get the full punch of a bass amp and you'll have to keep the volume down so you don't blow speakers! I've had luck plugging into an aux channel on the reciever. You might have to get a cord that has 1/4" on one end and an RCA plug on the other. You should be able to hear it well enough for practice but I wouldn't try using it for rehearsals in the garage!
Dave
