: Well my nephew's (13yrs old) about to start playing the bass. He's about to buy a Hammer Chaparral for $220. Sound like a good deal? He's going to skip on buying an amp at first. Is there an inexpensive way to run the bass through a home stereo or through a computer? Any help would be appreciated.

Steve,

I agree with Dave, but also - you need to turn the volume way down on the the bass; the output from the bass is too high for the stereo. You'll probably have to turn the stereo volume up all the way to compensate.
An alternative would be to buy a starter set - it includes a bass, a cord, a small amp, and sometimes a tuner; Ibanez and Fender Squier both make them.

Good Luck,

Rob
