: Saw Medeski, Martin and Wood recently with Chris Wood playing a Hofner "Beatle Bass" on some songs. Never considered a short scale bass before, but it looked and sounded great. And of course, Sir Paul plays one. Haven't seen one in the local music stores, either new or used. Would like to hear some opinions about them before I spend any time hunting one down. What's up? Is it a good bass, or is Chris Wood just so good that he can play any old thing and make it sing.

I was never really pushed on these basses because of their looks, but that's just me. I've never heard a real Hofner Beatle bass live, but, even on recordings they just didn't do it for me. If you want to get one, they're not cheap. They list for about $2400 depending on the model, and there are not many on the used market. Even if you find some, they probably won't be cheap. Here's a site you can visit to check them out: www.voxshowroom.com/northcoast/hofner/
There's a new one for sale here where I am in NYC. It's at Matt Umanov Music on Bleeker St. in Greenwhich Village. I believe they're asking $1900.
Not my cupof tea, but, variety is the spice of life.

Good luck. I hope this helped.
