A few more thoughts, starting from my earlier post on getting fast through practice.

1) If you want to become a great player, you will need to get more out of your practice time. Face it, most people cannot practice 8 hrs a day and maintain a normal life. So, plan every practice and make every practice count. One hour a day, seven days a week can get most of the advantages of longer training, providing the practice is focused. Imagine yourself being paid to practice, and then imagine your boss is listening to you. Would he allow you to noodle around?

2)Practicing scales is a must, particularly if you want to learn to improvise and especially for jazz. However, most people do not play just scales when they solo, they play solos. So once you have the basics of scales down, practice a series of scales that fits over a set of chord changes. Or practice dynamics (loud and soft) while playing the scale - emphasize every other note in the scale, swap accents.etc. Try to do something while practicing scales that is music, not just scales. Or just play the key notes of the scale 1,3,5,7,9,11 .

3) Become one with the metronome - some of the best pros' still practice daily with the metronome, but in creative ways. Jazz Bass players can improve the swing feel tremendously by walking lines with emphasis on the 2 and 4 beat, (use the metronome to count only 2 beats/measure). Or slow the metronome way way down and play exactly on the mark to improve time sense. If you have a flashing metronome, turn the audible beep off, and look occassionally at the light to see that you still are in synch. A great bass player has great time sense - its more important than just about anything else include speed. Flea, Jaco, Sting, Ray Brown,....all great players with a great time feel. We should internalize the time sense and the metronome can help us develop this ability.

Good Luck: How can I train to get fast? Playing fast...
: What should I do...what way is the best way?
: Thx
