: Hi,

: I have sort of a dumb question, but here goes...

: I want to learn the electric bass and I'm really into the hard metal stuff, like death metal and black metal. because of the extended low tunings this music calls for, I know that I will eventually be playing a 5-string.

: question: instead of the normal route of starting on a 4-stringer, would it be too much for a beginner to start on a 5-string bass?

: could I not just ignore that extra string while I'm learning the basics? or is there more to 5-string basses than just the extra string? (like scale length, etc.)

: your opinions are appreciated!

: thanks,
: Nick

The one difference ( IMHO ) in playing a 5 string is that the lower open strings can ring out when you play and to eliminate this you will need to incorporate a muting technique with your fingers to eliminate this unwanted sound of the open strings. Otherwise, I see no difference. Good luck!
