Great question, not easy to answer however. Mainly: the type of bass you play will shape the color of your sound. Personally, (I've been playing/recording for 26+ years), I started on an Ovation Magnum Bass (which I still have), which you can purchase used on Ebay. It does not have the bite of a Fender Jazz, but, it is a great tradeoff. You can play a good range of styles (minus slap/funk, that sort of thing). Also, I personally recommend getting a vintage MXR Dyna Comp to go with your Bass—especially if you intend to record (as you probably will, on a 4-track) directly into the board.

: I am 17 years old and I am just starting to play bass. And I had a few questions...

: 1. What would be a good beginner bass?
: 2. How the hell do you know which basses are good and which aren't?
: 3. Is there a website I can go to where I can learn tabs and notes and the basics of bass and what not?

: Thank you.
