: I just picked up a Squire 5 string a few months back and it isn't plywood. I found it to be a solid bass that was surprisingly inexpensive for the playability of it. The neck is super wide, wider than most 5's, but I've been playing for a while now and enjoy the workout it gives me. My advice to any beginning bassist is to steer clear of the new stuff until you TRULY KNOW what you want in a bass. It sounds to me like you're on a budget, so try looking for stuff on a community classified-ads webpage or check out the local pawnshops, etc. Most of my gear was acquired that way. Don't pay retail if you can avoid it, especially if you don't know what you like yet. Lots of instruments and amps built in the early 1970's are still around today working great. Don't be put off by old gear and always try before you buy. Don't be picky about name-brands either. Cort for instance used to really suck. Now they are making some truly amazing basses. Kent however, should be avoided!! : )
: Check out the attached link for an example of something old costing less, but giving you more bang for the buck. In US dollars this is around $210.00.

: : Kelly, I think if your going to spend $300, I would look around for a used Mexi Fender, which can be found for around $150-$200 and a BXR25 Fender or Peavey practice amp. I believe the current Fender Squires are made of plywood. The Mexi Fenders are made of poplar and some now are being built with alder. You really need to try the bass before buying if at all possible. Good luck!! rumblethump
