I recently bought a Hartke stack from a guy I know. It is the Hartke 2000 head, 410XL and 115XL. If I plug just the speakers into the head, with nothing in the inputs on the amp, I get a loud buzz, and sometimes even a squeal, like a feedback when I turn up the amp. As soon as I plug the bass into it, the noise goes away, except for the buzz from my pickups, musicman stingray. The head is one of the older units, no effects loop or direct line out, and the compressor does not work. I just turn it off and use an outboard compressor with a gate. Could my tube be going bad? I'm not really sure how to diagnose a bad tube, I've never had a tube amp. The amp still sounds fine, no distortion while playing, but as soon as I unplug from that active input, pulling the cable out of the amp input, (nothing else but speakers connected to that amp), I get the noise. Any Ideas, or should I start looking for a new amp. If I need a new one I will most likely go for the 3500 or the 5000.
I have ohmed out my speaker cables, and have tried unplugging one or the other speaker cabs, the noise remains. My speaker cables are 14 ga.
