Buying a bass depends a lot on how much you want to spend, naturally. Being a beginner, I would suggest starting on a 4-string. The 5-string neck could be discouraging to your improvement. If you're on a budget, look for a used bass. I've heard stories of bassists finding excellent instruments that way. I remember going to look at a blonde/maple neck Fender jazz bass with case for $200. As I arrived, a girl was walking out of the seller's house with it. She beat me to it. I asked to see it anyway. Needless to say, I was sick!!! I don't think brand name matters as much as how the instrument feels to you. For the various styles of music you mentioned, you probably want a bass with dual pickups in order to achieve a wider range of sounds. Be willing to "shop around." Good luck
