: : Hi, I'm new to bass playing, but I've been playing music in various forms for a little over nine years now. I've started off bass about three weeks ago with a Squire P-Bass (P/J pickups).

: : I've noticed that when I press down on a fret o

: n the E string, I get a weird noise, a little like a star wars laser. I know this isn't normal, and it makes playing stuff like the main riff from Paradise City impossible without it sounding really awful. Is there a technique for reducing this effect?

: : Sorry for being a newbie on you guys...

Dont worry about pressing harder on the frets. If your bass is set up right you shouldn't have to. All that'll do is make your fingers overtired. The neck might be bowed or twisted. sometimes it's hard to see,and the strings might not even be touching the frets, thats what those other guys were thinking, but sometimes my bass'll buzz even when the action is too high. These buzzes can be more mysterious than they first appear.
I recommend going to a good music store with a bass or guitar tech who can figure it out for you, but ask him if you can watch as he explains the problem and solution to you. Or you can just retune your strings & wait it out. buzzes sometimes mysteriously dissapear too!(if the "problem" is minor). If it's not showing up in your amp, it's not that bad anyway! Later.
