The classic short scale is the Gibson EB-O. I have one and it is very playable. Epiphone makes an EB-O clone for around $210 street (Musiciansfriend.com #518523) that I provided a middle school praise band, I play it often and it is very nice, heavier than my "real" EB-O. You can find these Epis on Ebay, along with a Hamer Slammer short scale, all going for around $150 or less NEW. I have not played the Hamer but it sure looks nice; All the above have cheaper pickups, including the original EB-O. I replaced the single pickup on my EB-O and am glad I did.
I'd be tempted to try the Hamer, but I also know you won't regret the Epi EB-O clone.
