I guess your jazz instructor never had to sing and play at the same time. I was told by a teacher to tap my foot with the heel on 1&3, toe on 2&4. By doing this you won't turn the beat around when soloing. Works for me. I think once you get comfortable with syncopation and reading, it really doesn't matter how you keep time.
