Hey guys, thanks fot your comments, especially how to tap with heel and toe.
: : : For years I kept the groove by tapping my foot. One of my college jazz instructors insisted I quit tapping my foot and count out loud. A definite improvement because now I can subdivide the beat into eights or sixteenths and play a lot of very tight figures.
: I guess your jazz instructor never had to sing and play at the same time. I was told by a teacher to tap my foot with the heel on 1&3, toe on 2&4. By doing this you won't turn the beat around when soloing. Works for me. I think once you get comfortable with syncopation and reading, it really doesn't matter how you keep time.
