As far as I know, active or passive pickups have nothing to do with the type of music you play. Active pickups use a battery and tend to be clearer, have more headroom, and a greater frequency range. They also usually have more eq posibilities. There are different types of both active and passive pickups, which have different sounds. The fact that they are active usually doesnt change the overall type of sound much, I think it just makes it sound better. I guess if you like your sound muddy and dull passive would be just as well, though. (I have a fender jazz bass with active emg pickups, and it has the same jazz sound as it did with the origial pickups, but I think it sounds much better now)
