First, passive pus will work with an active preamp or passive controls. Active pus work only with a preamp. The quality of the preamp can make a huge difference as does the quality of the pus. For the styles of music you play I'm inclined to recommend a passive system. When I got my LB75 a few years ago it only came with an active preamp. I liked it ok until I switched the preamp for an active/passive preamp. I now very rarely play with the preamp as passive just sounds more organic and to my liking. YMMV I suggest you go down to GC and try as many basses as possible with both types, and make the decision with your ears.

: Beginner here, but saving up for a nicer electric bass. Was wondering what the differences are between an active vs. passive pick up's? I'm mostly intersted in playing 60-70's rock and some blues and classic country and from what I've gathered thus far is passive would be the way to go with those genere's. I'm assuming active P.U.'s are more advantagious for heavy metal work?? Any feedback is appreciated!
