: I am building a Warmoth bass and am considering using walnut for the body. I have heard conflicting opinions about the tonal properties of walnut. Has anybody out there used walnut? I am also considering koa. I need a heavy body-wood to balance the warmoth neck (wenge) and it is a fretless bass so I need a bright sounding wood with good sustain. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Kevin I am a bass builder and consider walnut to be an excellent tone wood one of mt favorites. Coupled with a walnut neck and ebony board it yields a thick tone with good fundamental. Good bottom end mids and smooth highs. Also be on the lookout for the release of my instruments in Jan. 03 in Bass Player Magazine. Thanks Steve
