. . . Standing in the Shadows of Motown, about the "Funk Brothers", the nameless studio band who performed on the dozens of no. one hits put out by the famous record label. The prominent player in the documentary you all should be aware of is James Jamerson, who played all those funky bass lines with ONE finger. The film is inspired by the book on Jamerson, of the same name.
Look for it to come out soon in your area and see it before it leaves. Documentaries open different times at different places around the country and the world and don't stay for long. Jamerson's replacement bassist, Bob Babbitt played throughout the film, and just happened to be there at the theater last night when I saw it (in Nashville). After the movie ended, everyone in the theater came up and shook hands with him and expressed their appreciation. Bob told me the thing to look for is the DVD coming out later with extra features included.
The film is made by the same people who did the Oscar winning,"Buena Vista Social Club"(about Cuban music), and this one is AT LEAST as good, so I expect an Oscar for this one.
Go, and enjoy.
