: Anybody out there have any thoughts on 8-string basses? I tried a 12 string, found I loved the tone, but wasn't quite ready to dive in all the way.

: Any recommendations on manufacturer?

Don't do it! Unless you plan on starting your own superstar fusion band what's the point? The best thing about 8-string bass player is that's one less guy you have to worry about taking your gig. I've played a 12-string also. It as a lot of fun, maybe for around the house. I just don't think you'd be representing the soul of the bass and your role in the scheme of music as a whole. If you're out to be new and innovative that's fine but I'm not so sure you would be a true bass player any longer. Look at the history and I think you'll find some monster innovators that lived (and in some cases died) by the 4-string. Its all you need. Just an opinion.
