tell your friend that starter packs suck, they're cheaper than buying the items seperately but u don't know what your getting. Go into a music store with him and play on all the basses that interest him. The instrument should feel and sound the way you want it to, if its above your budget, save up for it, but whatever you do, don't buy anything b4 playing it. the reason that starter packs suck is bcuz u can't play the instrument before you buy it, all you know is what finish its in or what company manufactures it.
Also, Squier isn't a very good company (neither is fender for that matter!)Tell your friend to look at Ibanez basses, when they say they have good quality for a low price, they actually mean it!! ;)
