: I am seriously considering purchasing a fretless bass, and I am a HUGE fan of slap bass (its quite honestly my best talent on bass). I've heard more than once that fretless basses make lousy basses for slap. Is this true? If so, is it always true or not necessarily? Are there fretless basses that are good for slap? If so, can I get some brands? If anyone could give me some input, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Give a listen to the Brian Bromberg "Jaco'" tribute CD, the cut "Slangish". This is the most unbelievable example of fretless slapping I've heard, and I might just play nothing but fretless going forward. Seriously, you have to hear this. Good luck to you.
