Try going to SWR's website and see if they have the manual online for the amp and/or some suggested EQ settings.
In any case if you set all the controls to their neutral settings, you should get a decent tone out of it. Then you can adjust from there.
It is possible the equipment has mechanical problems. Don't buy a used amp if you have any doubts about its mechanical worthiness. If it's been rented out a lot it has probably been abused.
