: : Just a little confused on what to use. I have one of each. I love playing the 5string for the function gigs but love playing the 4 string for the jazz gigs. Should I be using the 5 on the jazz gigs as well. It seems a lot of people use the 5 these days. I love playing the 4 string but while playing think I'm missing out without having the 5th string there, but find the 4 string a lot more comfortable. Should I just go with the gut thinks?
: Nobody can really deside this for you but maybe my way of doing things is of some help:
: I quess my gear isn't the most conventional of gears, but they're great for me. I have a six-string bass, OK I realize that these days it's not so rare, but I like to think that the difference to other six-string players comes from the situations I use it in. (Thou maybe I'm wrong) I've used it when recording some pop tunes in studio, backing up a blues guitarist and probably using only the range of notes that a 4-string has aswell, and once I even played a gig with an orchestra full of wind instruments, kind of like a BIG big band but we didn't do any jazz songs, just these marchies and stuff.
: Anyway, the reason why I like to use my 6-string in these situations is the unpararrel sound it makes compared to any other basses I've used. Also I like the range of notes you can get from it, thou those notes only tend to come in handy when I play my true passion, jazz.
: The point of all this is trying to be that you can use whatever feels good for you and that will be the best solution. If you really like having the 5th string and you think your sound is better on that bass you can get as comfortable on your 5-string as your 4-string quite quickly. I have noticed it's easier for me to play my 6-string than it is to play my 4-string. It's just a matter of getting used to something... at least it has been for me.
: Hopefully this has helped you even a bit

: P.S. Your way of using the 5 on "the function gigs" and the 4 on jazz gigs sounds good too and maybe you could have both instruments on stage to have a choice on each song. That way it looks much cooler too ;)
