Go straight to the master. Victor Wooten has a tape out that really explains his technique and reasons for doing things. I know you're just beginning, so there's a lot that you will not be able to do. For me, where you hit the string is the critical part of getting a solid tone and sounding clean. I was taught that the thumb should hit the upper end of the fretboard when you slap and the fingers should be off the fretboard when you pluck out. Watching is one of the best ways and those tapes, though expensive, cost no more than a lesson and you will always have them as a reference. In the end, if you get the tone you want and are comfortable, there is no 'right' way. That's my opinion.
Best of Luck,
