Rick's right on the limiter... As far as compressors go, I've found the ones built in to amps to be far too -- uh -- limiting. I use the Alesis NanoCompressor, which is easy to use and extremely flexible, plus you can get one used for about $50. It comes with a template with settings to get started, and tweaking from there is pretty simple. I play many styles, from classic rock to funk to hard rock, I've got mine dialed in so that it's responsive to my dynamics whether I'm playing light pizzicato or slapping the hell out of it.

: Just got an amp with a limiter in it (SWR SM400). I don't think this does compression but a friend says it's the same thing.
