From personal experience, they key to funkey bass lines is minor thirds and anticipation. You should also add in a bit of half stepping up to your tonic too.
Just look at the Comodores, in "Brick House," it's in A major but the bassist uses those minor thirds. Same with The Average White Band's "Play that Funkey Music, Whiteboy," or whatever it's called.
So stick with minor thirds with the occasional 4th and you'll be ok.
