I've been a pro bassist for 8 years, have been a player for 16. I've had many basses but I believe Fender Jazz is a category by itself and is a must for every serious bassist. I have four basses and the one I would never sell is my vintage (early 70s) 4 string Jazz Bass. I replaced the pickups with DiMarzio UltraJazz and I also use a Sadowsky DI pedal. You wouldn't believe your ears, its really the sound that ALWAYS comes through ANY band - no matter what style I play! I advise you to buy a vintage Jazz Bass, sg around 1973-78. ONLY buy a US model. It's gonna be pricy - unless you're lucky- but it's worth it, believe me. And as for modern sounds I think you can buy a second bass, whichever sound you dig. I just ordered my US Lakland but had a MusicMan, Ibanez, also tried Warwick , etc. You won1t regret it, I know. Nobody does. :))
