The rest of the sound is in the fingering of the right hand. You have to strike the string down quite hard so that it, in turn strikes the frets. This gives you the mettalic attack that you hear on many Maiden recordings. Steve uses flatwounds on his basses so as the sound isn't too bright or mettalic. Have a go, Wraithchild is a good one to start with.
