I use a Fender Jazz just like yours with no problem.

The pre-amp would probably help. I found that either increasing the gain (as opposed to master volume) on my amp or using the preamp from my upright bass pick-up beefs up the sound to get closer to that "Marcus Miller" sound.

BTW, if you ever get the chance to play a Jazz bass with Sadowsky electronics through an ESB amp, you will flip at how good it sounds.
