Doug i went through the same thing you are going through a copuple of years ago. And the best advice that I can give you is "play what you are comfortable with"...

And it also depends on what sort of music you are playing. If you are playing Funk RnB Dance kinda stuff you might need a 5 string and if you are a blues Jazz player a 4 string might be better...

My main bass is a Fender Jazz 4 string , I'm about to buy a cheaper 5 string as my second bass...

: I've been learning (teaching myself) on a cheap 4 string; now I want to play on something with better sound. A 5 string obviously gives a wider range, and access to lower notes - yet most people play 4 strings.
