I use both 4 and 5 strings.
Its largely a matter of preference.
It does take some time to get used to the added string and not playing on the B instead of the E string.
Also the spacing on many 5 strings is closer which may make slapping more difficult. If you get a bass with a wide neck option, then you have to contend with a real handful.
Certain styles like Gospel pretty much require a low B. Jazz, country, classic rock and blues is pretty much 4 string. I cant speak for the alternative but Linkin Park does a lot of low B stuff.
You can also detune your E string to D or lower for an occassional tune.
One more thing - if you are just starting out, it may be better to stick with the 4. Try borrowing a 5 until you are really sure you need it.
