As far as amp settings go i think everyone else has it covered... but for a bass, apart from the basses that have been talked about already, the ibanez ergodyne series is great if you're a diverse player. The eq on it is just well nothing short of amazing and you can get any sound with it, must be something to do with the active eq +passive pickups. It also has a fast neck which is great, but it's quite thin so slapping takes a bit of getting used to

My other point is for effects i sometimes use a Electroharmonix Q-tron the harder ur slap and pop the more the effect comes in. Takes a lil while to get used to though
