You can get stomp-box compressors that go between the guitar and the input, but I wouldn’t recommend them. Your best bet is to get a decent pro-audio model. For bass guitar you could get away with a budget model like Behringer Composer. Even better, you can get old Ashly compressors on eBay fairly often, usually under $150; in fact, there is a CL-52 up for auction right now.

You can connect the compressor between the pre-amp and amp. However, the action of the compressor is very much dependant on input signal, so it’s best to connect it through an effects loop. That way the compression you set up will remain the same if you have to change the volume of your stage amp.
