: If you looking for classical Fender you can just buy Fender Deluxe Precision Special
: (http://www.fender.com/gear/gear.php?partno=0135700) or similar Squier P-bass Special (http://www.squierguitars.com/gear/gear.php?partno=0321500_Special).

: I have seen many other models e.g. ESP, Ibanez producing P+J basses.

: Buying new P-bass and installing additional J-pickup would cost more and requires time and skills but results may vary a lot.

: I had p-j style bass (ESP LTD b-50). Its p+j combination takes all advantages of both pickups.

Thanks Dimokus; I have a choice of a Fender California Special (p-j, p body + j neck) or a Yamaha Attitude Special (both new!!). The Yamaha has a p pickup and a woofer. I loved playing it, it made my hands feel fast and the frets closer together! The tone was also great. I definitely prefer it to the Fender (which is also very good to play) but I worry about the limited sounds available.
Analysis paralysis!
