Be patient. Run scales, use a metronome...
I have been playing 19 years and still improve my technique.
I have read this one gallops with three fingers.
Classical technique is to pluck with two, period.
Jaco P. used two and only two to pluck. My own experience is that the third finger 3 holds the much stronger 1 and 2 back.
Just be patient, what makes you think you can do what a master does after only ten years? If you must, go ahead and learn to gallop with three.
But, you will slow down your overall development by taking time from focusing on 1 and 2. Not to mention I suspect developing the muscles for the ring finger will slightly decrease blood flow for the forearm overall.
What can I say, some people swear by the ring finger. I am going with the classical advice and my own experience. It has served me well of late, I only dropped the ring for the second time a few months back.
Check out Barbary Coast on Word of Mouth Revisited.
Listen to the part from around 4:19 to 4:43. Jaco hits about 540 bpm (perhaps more) plucking with 1 and 2. The ring is truly a handicap in the long run, but I can see why someone would want to have it around at times in the early years.
Just be patient.
