I think you should put a new battery in for sure.
Your description of the problem sounds like a battery problem. I would then check the height between the strings and pickups when you fret the bass in the highest fret position you usually play at. The distance between them should be in the 3/16" to 1/4" range. If they are too close together it may be part of your problem also. Then lower the pickup to the correct height.
If you decide to take it to your local music store, first ask around to find who is a good tech to do the work. Some techs I wouldn't trust with a Ukelele. Then ask if you can observe him/her while they do the setup so that you can do it yourself in the future. It will save you a lot of money, and it really isn't that hard.

: oh yeah, it has active pickups.....and i haven't tried putting in a new battery yet.
